Pulled the outdrive, just to make sure it was okay. Surprise! Gray lube/water pouring out of the driveshaft bellows (which has no cracks). Soooo looks like a bad seal in the upper gear case. Again, easy enough, but golly - everything is worn out! No nuts on the bottom of the front engine mount bolts - it was just sitting there. I guess it's fortunate I'm finding this stuff, but wow, this guy was a slob. Every sparkplug had a different gap??/!! Oil on the dipstick looks perfectly clean, hardly run at all - as it should. The oil pump probably was not functional! Again, at least it did not leave me stranded on the water. He had the shift interruptor wire cut, too. Probably ought to hook it up, and see if it works, before ordering the new and improved part. This forum has been a wealth of info - thanks guys!!

i agree, it's terminal, i'll buy it from you for the $300 or so i could get for the scrap alum....:D;)

what a pretty boat! given that your outdrive is toast too, sounds like it's time for either a donor boat or an OB conversion

Oh, it'll come around after I dump some money into it! I'm just surprised it ran as well as it did without any oil pressure. WOT was 4600, and the boat really handled well. My family sold Starcrafts in the 60's and early 70's, so this really is a blast from the past for me. Gonna take some time though.

Very nice boat Lewistt. I really like that paint job, something about it just jumps out at me. Don't be surprised if someone tells you there is a boat in Va that looks just like yours:eek:
Welcome and get her running again.:D

Delved a bit deeper into the motor today. One chipped tooth on the flywheel, starter has some bent teeth on the bendix gear, water FILLING #1, 2, and 4. I'm calling it a bad exhaust manifold. Rust marks streaming down side of block below the manifold. So, what I need to know is, Where is a good source for a motor, and I assume it is a 12 3/4" flywheel - can a 14" fit? In any case, gonna need a new flywheel. The coupler looks fine, as far as splines/ anything I can see at this point. Will I need a new coupler with a 14" flywheel,or can I go with the one on the boat? Adding in an aftermarket outdrive, I think I am looking at around 4000.00. Less than a new 40 hp outboard motor. Not too bad, when you think about it. Just gonna take time and money. I have tons of time - limited moola!
