Miles per gallon?

1985 22ft walk around cuddy. Four banger125a , 270 OD. Any idea what type of mileage to expect? I know gear on board and other things can make it vary. Just wondering what is common?.

Boats are not measured with MPG. There are too many variables that would affect it. Instead they use GPH or Gallons per hour. This of course will vary with engine speed.

Bad statement there. Anything that burns fuel and covers distance is measured in MPG. Are all those MPG figures published with all the boat tests just someone's imagination?

GPH is useless without knowing the boats speed. RPM is irrelevent if you're interested in economy. For example, which boat can go farther on 50 gallons of gas, one thats best cruise speed burns 8 GPH at 3500 RPM or one that burns 9 GPH at 4000 RPM? Can either one make it to a destination 180 miles away on 50 gallons?

No way to tell from GPH and RPM.







Now try to figure it out if you know that the one burning 8 GPH is doing 28 MPH, and the one burning 9 GPH is doing 36 MPH.

Not to hard to figure out if you're smart enough to calculate MPG. 28/8 = 3.5 MPG. 36/9 = 4 MPG. The boat burning 8 GPH will go 175 miles in 6.25 hours, while the boat burning 9 GPH will go 200 miles in 5.56 hours. The 8 GPH boat will run out of fuel 5 miles short of the destination, while the 9 GPH boat will have 5 gallons of gas left when it gets there.

Biggest boat I could find on Boattest with a 4 cylinder was a 19' Tahoe, which gets about 5 MPG (I put an arrow on the MPG column for you bhile in case you couldn't find it).

Eddie Ray, you'll probably find that your boat will be somewhere around 3.5 - 4 MPG since it's bigger, 25 years old as opposed to new, and most likely heavier than the Tahoe.

All that is well and fine on paper but, no where in there have I seen you show conditions that really matter such as sea's, set and drift, prop slippage and head winds. Miles per gallon is good in a simulated lab. In the boat industry, in a professional setting you'll find that GPH is what is most always used. Same as an aircraft pilot, you will never hear a pilot measure distance by MPG. Not a bad statement from bhile.
