What's the difference between a "Military" Johnson motor and a regular Johnson motor? I saw a 30hp Johnson on Craigs list and it's a Military motor with a "de-watering" system? Haven't got a clue what that is???

Re: Military motor?

I believe one of the major specs for military outboards is that they can remain submerged for over 30 min in a marine environment, and still be fired right up. As a result, they have lots of extra systems bolted onto them, such as the de-watering system you mentioned. There are probably other specs that contribute to its robustness too. I'm not sure if you could remove all the extra qizmos and turn it back into a regular/civilian motor, but you might be able to get a good deal. The military buys those things like potato chips, use them for a bit, then sell them on.

The seller claims this one has 2 hours on it. Stickers still on the prop! (He wants $1800)

Re: Military motor?

I believe the 2 hrs. is probably right. My brother-in-law is in a Marine Corps supply wing and can order tanks and helicopters by the dozen, use them once and get another one, if need be, so boat motors are nothing. However, I'd be worried that it may have so many "improvements" to it that it will be costly to fix/maintain. Then again, maybe it's tough as nails and won't break down for ages. Of course, I'd probably just take the $1800 and buy a dozen old big twins and fix 'em up.

Haha! I would, but my inquiry was for a buddy of mine and I think he's the one who's going to buy it.

Is it an AML35D? If it is an IMARS motor google that and you will understand the systems on it. It is pretty impressive, Id buy one!

Yep, I second that motion. Big Twins are as cheap as potato chips right now and a fleet of them can be had for $1800 :D:D
