I know this is way off topic but with the resources found here I figured I would give it a spin.

My daughter bought an old WWII Dress Green jacket and it has this unit patch on it.

All I have found it that it a Ports of Embarkation patch or unit. A google search and military.com search did no good.

Does anyone recognize it? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Military Unit Patch

"The design is of the branch-of-service insignia of the Ordnance Corps. Its use is unknown but it may have been worn by faculty personnel when the Ordnance Field Services School moved to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in 1940." this is copied from that site that ss mayfloat posted. it's strange that it has a ships wheel. i would think that it would be some kind of navy patch or some mariner patch.

There may be a link to the Navy. The navy rating insignia for Quartermaster is the ships wheel. The Quartermaster is/was responsible for ordnance aboard ship.

If not for the US Army patch over the pocket I would have thought Navy too...a detail I forgot to mention.

Thanks

Yep, that the insignia for a quartermaster for the sea going services. Don't know about the Army though. Interesting.

The quartermaster is the ships navigator, or at least that is their specialty. I've not heard that they are responsible for ship's ordinance, but they frequently serve as Master at Arms. There are many enlisted rates that fill this position however.

Well, I looked at Wikipedia and that is not the Army's quartermaster corp insignia. Aparently a quartermaster in the Army is someone who mans a store that stocks uniforms. I didn't know that.
