I recently purchased a 18.5' Four Winns 180 Freedom with a OMC Srern Drive and powered by a GM 3.0 litre engine. I did test engine before I bought it by hooking it up to a hose and fake lake attachment. I used for 2 weekends and last Friday my son and me took it out for a quirk cruise. After warming it up we went 1 or 2 miles at .75 to full throttle. We than slowed down to near idle speed and putted along. I than noticed a sputtering noise from rear of boat. At first I thought the bilge has left on and was sucking air. When I pulled back the engine cover I saw light grey paste similar to liquid car wax spitting out of hose going from valve cover to air arrestor. There was quite a bit in bilge area as well as splatterd on rear of boat and top of block. Although engine was running fine we shut it off and were towed back. The oil pressure did read a little low from normal reading. When we got to shore I checked dip stick and it was also covered with the paste. I also took plug off oil fill hole and it also had the paste. I assume that this is water and oil mixed. Besides a cracked block is there any other way that this could happen?

don't want to give you any false hopes and I am no expert, others will no doubt enter in on this.
I had a similar problem once and could not place it. You do have water in your oil not a good thing. Maybe a possibility is condensation but you have not listed fully what other things / variables might have caused a head gasket to go or your block to crack.... I think the experts will tell you to get it pressure tested. I've never done it but apparently pretty simple proceedure.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure what the other variables would be as I've only owned the boat for 3 weeks. I wonder if the previous owner didn't properly winterize the boat even though he said he did. I hope that this was just a fluke and that the seller wasn't unloading a dying dog.

It's not condensation. You have a cracked block.

Not neccesarily. The exact same thing happened to me a few years ago on my 3.0 Turned out to be exhaust manifold. Have it pressure tested before you go replacing an engine. If you're not mechanically minded, find a mechanic that you trust. This could get expensive.

I had a smilar situation a few years ago coming out of winterization. It still does not make sense to me, I changed the oil and kept an eye on it... never saw it again.
That was strange... it isn't likly your problem... pressure test it.

Depends on how much water is in the oil. If it is just a little bit causing the frothing, it could be the manifolds/risers. If it a considerable amount of water, it is a cracked block.

Thanks for all your input. I'm curious how long it would take oil and water to mix and make the thick paste like grey stuff. Would this happen almost right away or would it take several minutes, 15 minutes, etc etc. The reason for this is that my problem may have happened prior to this trip out. Had a very hard stop the last time I ran the boat and water could have entered the engine if the exhaust flap was bad. I may be all wet
