best option is to replace your seals this is a really easy job. Basically there is 2 seals in the barring carrier find a slide hammer the carrier will pop right out. There is also a big o-ring on the carrier its hard to miss when you pull it. A 69 evinrude 55hp is a hydro-electric shift(you have to push a button switch to change gears) so you will have a gasket under the solenoid cover(where your 2 shift wires lead). And also under the water pump on your drive shaft seal cover. I don't think I have missed any your local dealer should have a seal kit for about 30 to 35 bucks. Its really easy to do but I do recommend getting the book as the shift solenoids can be confusing to some as you replace that gasket.

You typically don't want to run it so much with water getting in the oil because, there is a hydraulic pump that switches the gears when you push your buttons and with water in the oil you can badly damage that pump.

Hope i have helped out.

yes you have helped very much. Im glad I checked that lower unit oil. Im waiting on the service manual. Im just going to wing it. I know out boards are dfferent but Ive built my fair share of cars. Im guessing I just need to ask for a lower unit seal kit? along with the impeller kit. she should be ready for the water after this if the weather stays nice for 1/2 day. I think she will be pretty reliable (hoping) fires right up since I got her running dont run it long parinoid about that pump but does not get hot. also another question I noticed my propeler moves out of gear but if I put my foot on it I can stop it. I have gone through the F & R seem to both work fine go right into gear
Thanks I owe everyone a beverage that has had the time to give adivce.
Thanks Ted

There are (2) seals behind the prop. one keeps water out the other keeps oil in. Watch which way they get installed.

Thats natural for your prop to move like that in neutral
