milling the head

I was thinking about trying to shave the head down on my 1994 johnson 40 hp. There is some damage to the head in the "squish" area of the dome. If I can get away with milling some off It'd save me some $$. Does anyone know how high I can run the theoretical compression ratio or how much I'd be able to take off the head? I'm guessing I'll need to take off at least 0.040" to clean it up.

I wouldn't take off more than .010".

Are you in the process of changing the piston too?

Dhadley
I will have to change the pistons. Are there lower compression pistons out there which would enable me to take more off the head to get it back into usable form? Or maybe thicker head gaskets available?
