I posted some info about The Big Rock Marlin tournament in salt water fishing but the twist it has taken is too big not to share. The first day of the tournament Citation caught a monster 883 lbs and it was a new tournament record and easily was the winner after 6 days . Over $910,000.00 first prize money .... BUT wait , one crew member did not have a fishing license , All aboard are required to have a license as you never know who will help boat the fish for weigh in . One hired crew member failed the lie detector test and indeed did not have a fishing license . DISQUALIFIED fish , record , tournament win and no prize money . The most a 10 day license could cost is 35.00 for out of state , 5.00 for NC resident .. OOPS !

How did they not know this and check the license of every crew member BEFORE he even got on the boat? $910K, lots of green, even divided up!

Bummer to the rest of the crew, but rules are rules...glad too see they're held up. Some folks just always think that rules don't apply to them, see it everyday on the water and the road!

I was thinking that it was a big-time innocent mess-up that the captain of the boat should have caught. However, who would have thought some goof-ball would be out on a charter boat without a license?????
Some people just make stupid mistakes, though, and aren't thumbing their nose at anyone..... I've done it a couple of times.

That's a horror story for sure!
BTW, I was thinking that maybe the guy just lost his license and actually had one. In my state, the licenses are kept track of electronically and he could just give the state the info and they would verify that he had a license and give him a new one for a small fee. Too bad it doesn't sound like the case here.....

I don't know enough fact's to point fingers, just saying...there's a lot of plain idiots who just don't know better, just don't care, or just don't have enough sense to ask questions...in this case, failing a lie detector test sez to me, that he tried but failed in beating the system, why else even bother to be tested?

Re: Million Dollar Mistake !

Here is some more interesting info , $18,000.00 to enter , The captain can apparently buy a boat fishing license for $150.00 that covers up to 10 people for 10 days .
I put a call into a friend who fished in the tournament and has some connections , If I get any inside info I will post it But I was told the person is going to be charged for fishing without a license by the state.

Here is the latest that I have heard and have no way to confirm it , The person in question may have applied for and bought a license but never waited to get it , The decision is back on hold for now .

Re: Million Dollar Mistake !

here is the latest confirmed info :
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.

Officials with the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, N.C., announced Monday that they are holding off on a decision about the results of the event, which concluded Saturday.

Tournament officials withheld payment to the winning team after it failed a polygraph test - issued to several team members after the event.

In question is a tournament rule that requires everyone - including the captain and mates - to have a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License.

A mate on the Hatteras-based Citation didn't have a required license, but tournament officials are looking into whether the unnamed mate had been issued the license in time to comply with tournament rules.

A spokes person with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries on Monday identified the mate as 22-year-old Peter Wann of Alexandria. On Sunday Wann was cited for fishing without a license - which carries a $35 fine and $125 in court costs.

?The mate in question was cited Sunday after the Big Rock had notified our marine patrol that there were some concerns,? NCDMF spokes person Patricia Smith told the Raleigh News and Observer.

Tournament director Crystal Watters said Monday that tournament officials are working to solve the situation.

"We have been in contact with the Division of Marine Fisheries, as well as the North Carolina Attorney General's Office," Watters said in a press release Monday. "We are exercising due diligence in this investigation, so to protect our participants, sponsors and charities."

A ruling against the team would result in the loss of a little more than $1.2 million in winnings - $318,750 instantly awarded Monday for catching a tournament-record 883-pound blue marlin, and an additional $912,825 for winning the overall blue marlin division.

The license in question costs $15 for North Carolina residents and $30 for nonresidents.

Andy Thomasson of Richmond caught the fish - his first blue marlin. After the announcement he told the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News: "We didn't do anything wrong. But one of our people did. He failed to get a fishing license, but we didn't know it."

If the team on Citation, a vessel partly owned by Michael Topp, is disqualified, runner-up Carnivore, out of Cape Carteret, N.C., would take the big money on a 528-pound blue marlin brought in by angler John Parks of Jacksonville.

He should have to walk the blank. :)

I buy a 200 dollar boat license so everyone on my boat is covered during the commercial striped bass fishery. I do not want to be heavily fined for someone elses stupidity.

"Will the jury foreperson please read the verdict in Count 1 - murder of a crew member with no fishing license."

"Yes, Your honor." We the jury, find the defendant not guilty! We also believe that the accused should have kicked him in the crotch, repeatedly, for hours, until he ended up with something stuck in his throat, before making sure that he could never crew again .... ever .... as in permanently!"

Wow! both the idiot and the captain should have walked the plank. They put up 18K for entry fee but couldn't pay the 150 bucks boat license? jeez...

Re: Million Dollar Mistake !

Yes it has been decided , They were indeed disqualified . The Marlin was reported boated at 3:16 pm , the state said the crewman submitted an online license application at 5:51pm .

PRESS RELEASE

After interviewing members of the crew of the fishing vessel ?Citation?, review of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament rules, consulting the division of Marine Fisheries as well as the North Carolina Attorney General?s office, it is apparent that there has been a substantial violation of Tournament rules. The Board of Directors has unanimously determined that they have no choice but to disqualify the 883 pound blue marlin caught on June 14, 2010. The rule violation did not involve ?dishonesty? or ?cheating? on the part of the owners or angler of the ?Citation?.

The rule violation involves the ?mate? not having a Coastal Recreational Fishing License. This license is required by North Carolina law. It is required by the Tournament as written in our rules. Participants and crew were reminded of the license requirement at the Captains meeting prior to the Tournament. The mate engaged in fishing activities without a valid license and later obtained a license at 5:51 pm while heading to the weigh station. The fish was boated at 3:16 pm.

This is an unfortunate situation for the crew of ?Citation? as well as the Tournament itself. For the integrity of the Tournament, Big Rock has no choice but to enforce the rules and disqualify the fish.

Because of this disqualification, The Big Rock Board of Directors declare Carnivore in 1st Place with their 528.3 pound blue marlin and in 2nd Place Wet-N-Wild with their 460 pound blue marlin.
