Minn Kota 40PD Problem

I recently inherited a MonArk Bass Boat with a Minn Kota 40PD (PD = Power Drive) trolling motor.

The boat has been sitting for over two years and not taken very good care of, there were leaves 8" thick in the floor and you guessed it the foot control was under it all.

I put a hot battery on it and the direction seems to be working great, I have been unable to get the prop to turn at all. When I hit the foot control I can hear what sounds like a relay but no action from the prop.

Any ideas???? The prop is not seized up - I can turn it easily by hand if that makes any difference.

My thoughts were to open the foot control first and see if any damaged parts or loose contacts / connections that may be causing the problem? I have a Parts Diagram of the motor and foot control.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the foot control cable connector to make sure the pins are straight and clean. Probably just a bad connection.

Check the foot control cable connector to make sure the pins are straight and clean. Probably just a bad connection. I'm not sure on that particular motor if it has a stowed safety switch meaning the motor will not run in the stowed position. Deploy it and try.

Re: Minn Kota 40PD Problem

Bill thanks for the information and link - I was able to find the problem using the instructions provided in the link!
One of two control boards are out - Have not narrowed which one yet (Foot Control Board or the main Control Board) I did not have a voltage meter so I bypassed the control boards with a jumper and the motor engaged and ran.

They want $70 each for the Control Panels - I can buy a new Foot Control for the same price, so if it is that board I will just buy a new FC. If not, the control board for the motor has been discontinued (Part # 2304014) the new replacement requires a small modification but will work (Part # 2304043) - or so I'm told? It also sells for $70

One other question is what does the MOM / CON actually do?

Silvertip - I checked to see if it had a safety so that it would not run while stowed, I'm not certain if it does or not - I had to bypass all the control boards and circuits with a jumper - so if it does it was bypassed to test the lower end.

Thanks guys - this forum is great!

I'm 95% sure that motor does not have a safety switch. Mom stands for momentary run (motor runs when you depress switch on pedal) and Con stands for constant run.
