Minn Kota controller modification

I have inherited a pair of MK RT101S trolling motors with modified controllers. The modification was to attach a gear motor at the end of the speed control handle to twist the handle using an RC car controller. I need to replace the "soft rheostat" on the controller with a heavy duty potentiometer. Wiring is the problem. The "soft rheostat" has two three-wire ribbon cables attaching it to the main board. Does anyone know how to replace the existing soft rheostat?

Hello I am assuming (ther it is again) that they are the forward and reverse potentiometers. First of all you need to identify the corect polarization of each set. It should have a wiper (the middle lead on each set) adn one should should read with a DMM 0 ohms to the wiper and the other should read full ohms with respect to the first or number 1 lead , if you connect your DMM leads to the wiper and lead 3 the twist it I believe the ohms should count down say from 5 ohms to 0. If you have a manual or parts exploded view of the TM or a schematic of that controller I can help you more. It is a little tricky for most people with electronics background but but if your in no way electronic savvy then this might seem a little more challenging. I have never personally done this but I also have a manual Maxxum 74H that is manual and happen to have plent of RC stufff kickin too, and was pondering this project but my TM is located easily within reach and also I am selling all my RC stuff.
If you can provide a little more info that would be great.
