Minn Kota maintenance, upkeep?

A Minn Kota Genesis 55AP came with a used boat we bought in the fall. We haven't tried it out yet on the water, the boat hasn't seen freshwater yet, but that will change this summer.

I have test ran the engine in the driveway in barrel, and it seems pretty cool to say the least. I never knew electric trollers had power trim and tilt, and hadn't really realized how complicated it was, I can't wait to try it on the water. The thing lowers itself with the touch of a button, and turns itself with arrows on a foot petal, and has some kind of autopilot feature.

I've heard that these Genesis engines are no longer made, and parts may to be available. There is nothing wrong with it, I'd like to keep it that way. Its a few years old but I don't believe it was used much. I can't find anything in the manual about how to care for it, or if any naubtenance is required. Its an expensive peace of equipment and I'd hate to ruin it by doing (or not doing) something stupid.

How does this thing work?
Is there any fluid in the lower unit?
A maintenance-free peace of equipment capable of this much seems too good to be true, am I missing something?

Re: Minn Kota maintenance, upkeep?

Ryan,

You are correct that Minn Kota has discontinued the Genesis. I have heard several different reasons why and can think a few of my own but the folks at Minn Kota would still be selling the Genesis if it was more profitable than other product alternatives. It was about the same time the Genesis hit the market that Minn Kota also shotguned the market with many other alternatives such as the powerdrive, maxxum, universal sonar, autopilot, co pilot, riptide etc. Unfortunately, these features couldn't all be packaged into the existing bells and whistles of the already quite technical Genesis.

About two or three years ago Minn Kota was offering a brand new powerdrive unit to folks that cut the control pedal off their used Genesis and mailed it in to Minn Kota. Since being discontinued, I have seen a few on E Bay and in the bargain cave at Cabelas but they are still commanding a fairly high price just to buy for spare parts. Although you may still be able to get parts for the Genesis today, it may be a different story a few years down the road when the girl that answers phones for Minn Kota says...."What Genesis"

I know some Minn Kotas that have had many birthdays and will indeed have many more since they are well taken care of. However, the old school will tell you the more moving parts and gadgets, the more potential of something going wrong.
