I just picked up a 1542 alumacraft I tried running my 9.9 on it this wknd it pushed it ok wouldn't plane out I was thinking a 20 horse would be the ticket for this boat it max horsepower is rated for is 25. Would a 20 be enough? Thanks

15x42 is a great size. 20 would be fine. 25 would be better if the boat is floored and decked.

Thsose smaller jons are really sensative to weight distribution, alot of people put the battery, gas and themselves in the back of the boat, try spreading the load out by getting the battery and gas up front and that should help alot till you find a new engine.

Had and old 12-14 and did that and it made a huge difference but as they say no substitute for cubic inches and a 20 should really move that boat.

25 would work great. if you duckhunt, you'll need it. Is this a tiller model you are looking?

Setup right the 9.9 should pop on plane and run about 20-21 mph.You would be surprised what weight balance and maybe a tiller extension could do.
Of course a larger motor will run faster and get up quicker, but you still need to be sure its setup right. We had a 12 ft flat bottom steel boat with a 5hp gale. With a tiller extension and my 180lbs
in the middle seat it would pop on plane in about 25 ft and run close to 12 mph.

Re: minuim horsepower rquirements?

my boat will run 4-5 hours on one gallon using mostly half throttle or less (easily planed out already) and nailing it wide-open when the water allowed. i love my 1542 alumacraft and my honda 20hp outboard. yes 20 is plenty
