misfiring

merc 70 misfiring at idle and at higher speeds while checking the carbs i saw gas spitting out of each carb then it would backfire. while checking the timeing i grounded the no 1 plug and the idle smothed out? what gives?

Sounds like a bent or broken reed to me, maybe more than one. I have no clue why it would smooth out when killing one cylinder.<br />Good Luck
