Missing Carb Part

I'm rebuilding the carbs on a 1978 1400. I dropped a very small ball shaped part (looked like a plastic type material) and boy I can't find it. It sits on top of the Idle Tube below the Idle adjusting screw. Anyone have any idea where I might purchase another?, or is it even necessary to replace it?

Thanks for the help.

Dave, The only thing above the idle restrictor tube is a brass plug. Go on the crowlymarine.com web site and look up the parts list for that motor's carbs. You may be able to buy it right there.

I do not know what part you mean, and I have had those carbs apart many times.

Re: Missing Carb Part

The "thingy" is about half the size of a BB, grey in color and was sitting on the top of the idle tube. This is carb number two of three, and the top carb had one too (which I almost lost also). I tried to catch this one with a nitril glove on and it bounced out of my palm. It's not on the exploded drawing I got with the kits I bought from iboat. I have the brass plug. I have not idea what it's function would be except perhaps to help atomize or cause turbulance in the fuel before it gets into the throat of the carb. Makes a guy go hmmmm.

That is a new one on me. I would only think it would serve to mess up the idle mixture.

Re: Missing Carb Part

Chris,

I was able to fabricate one. Looking at this carefully, seems to be a check valve to keep the idle chamber full when not in use on the other circuits, or to keep it from leaking down during periods of life on the trailer. still makes a guy go hmmmmm.

Like Chris, I have had my fair share of merc carbs apart and I have never seen anything above the idle tube except the brass plug. Whatever it is, I would not put it back in.

Re: Missing Carb Part

Chris/Dave, I'm still waiting for an annode that will clear my new prop, and while reading your replies about the round 'thingie", it occurred to me that the one I made may not be gasoline/alcohol compatible, so I'm pulling it out prior to installation. Hopefully I'll get home on time and I can start bolting things back on. The annode is due here Friday and I wanna go for a test run if it does.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post and for the help.

Regards
