Missing Instruments?

Hey All!! I am loving all the free information and advice this great community dishes out, very much appreciated. One thing I haven't seen notes about so I must ask - I bought a 1990 Bayliner Capri w/85hp Force about 2 months ago. So far it's been a great little weekend activity with my 7 yr old, been doing a few things it needed (mostly minor things) BUT I am vexed about missing gauges!

None of the instruments work, which is one thing in itself but there are only 2 instruments: Speed and Fuel. Were these the only ones "present" in that year's model?? I figure I'll need at least a tach and a batt meter (these seemed to be aftermarket mostly)

I was going to spend the day tomorrow figuring out the electrical continuity but I was wondering about that, the panel has not been altered so I would have to assume these were factory left out....anybody knows?

Thanks in advanced.....

Re: Missing Instruments?

Hi Eddie, welcome to the forum. To answer your question in short...yes, those were the only 'standard' gauges that went with the boat. A tach was optional on the outboards and I'm not sure about the other gauges availability (water/trim/volts/etc). You can purchase a tach for your boat fairly easily...probably about $50-60 bucks. It needs to be a 20 pole type for that motor.;)
As for you fuel gauge not working, check the connections at the gas tank/bilge area. They are probably corroded and need a good clean. I doubt the gauge itself is at fault. That said, a fuel gauge that is the exact one for your boat is up for auction on ebay. It might be worth it to check it out.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Re: Missing Instruments?

Thanks man! I checked it today and indeed the bolt looked a bit under the weather; cleaned it, stripped it clean and still nothing.

The guy that I bought it from told me the "thought" the sender had gone bad....guess he was right. I may sprint for a new one and see what's what. I was kinda hoping for the gauge to be culprit because it's really sun-damaged and one can barely see in...was hoping to kill two birds with one stone....oh well.

Thanks for the quick reply!
