missing o-ring on jonny 110 driveshaft?

background: swapping 1995 88SPL powerhead with a 1986 110 Jonny powerhead.

everything is going smoothly save for this discrepency. the 1995 has an o-ring where the arrow is, and the earlier 1986 110 does not.

I believe I had read where the o-ring is placed somewhere else on earlier models, but so far i have been unable to figure out where that might be from the shop.evinrude schematics.

I've got the motor ready to drop onto the midsection, but really need to know if i need the o-ring elsewhere or not.

The o-ring should be on the driveshaft when you replace the gearcase on the earlier models.

I believe that you have a different length in the driveshafts between the two years.

What you're doing will work just fine but you'll end up with no drivehaft O ring. No problem if you use good grease on the splines when it goes together. You'll be doing a water pump every couple of years so you'll be regreasing the splines regularly anyway.

absolutely awesome!

the pic was exactly what i needed 'cause I was trying to figure out exactly what was the o-ring supposed to be doing. I'm guessing just keep contaminates from splashing up into the splines.
