MY 1986 150XR2 HAS RECENTLY STARTED OVERHEATING-I REPLACED IMPELLER & KIT-I NOTICED WHEN PUTTING LOWER UNIT BACK TOGETHER, THE TUBE ON TOP OF THE IMPELLER HOUSING IS LARGER THAN THE TUBE IT CONNECTS TO INSIDE THE UPPER UNIT-SHOULD THERE BE A COUPLING OF SOME SORT BECAUSE IT IS NOT A TIGHT FIT AT ALL-THE PEE STREAM IS VERY WEAK MAKING ME THINK THERE IS LOST PRESSURE FROM A NON TIGHT FIT-IS SOMETHING MISSING?

JC...

Is there a grommet in the water pump housing discharge hole that the water tube goes into?

Re: MISSING PART?

I think your talking about #37 in the picture below. Also is #28 installed? You said you installed a new kit. As in wear plates, gaskets and o-rings? #37 should fit snug (not tight)on the water tube in the upper housing. You did buy the correct kit?
Re: MISSING PART?

trent,

thanks for the diagram-i have no manual-the kit i installed did include a few o-rings & other small parts which i think apply to #18 & below-i worked on #23 & above. part #37 is the one i was concerned about but it is not a snug fit on the upper housing tube. after completion, it was barely peeing-better than before though-it's hard to tell with the earmuffs-i'll get a better read when i put it in the water. thanks

Re: MISSING PART?

JC...item #37 is a guide tube. This insures the water tube mates up to the discharge hole in the pump housing. It will fit lose. Item #28 is the grommet. This is the part I mentioned in my previous post. You should have gotten one in the kit. This must be in place or you will lose water to the block. It will fit snug around the water tube.

Re: MISSING PART?

I remember now, the guide tube already had the grommet in place when i inserted #37 onto the impeller housing-so what could be causing the lack of pressure when peeing not to mention the water being hot? A blown head gasket was mentioned, out of timing was mentioned as well as a blockage of some sort in the block. What do you think?

Re: MISSING PART?

Did you check the thermostats and pressure relief valve. You can remove both thermostats, start engine, water on, 1500 rpms. you should have a gusher of water from the thermostat holes.

Re: MISSING PART?

Would the earmuffs allow enough pressure to test the thermostat holes-it won't be in the water for about 3 weeks or so
