Missing spring?

I've stripped the carb on my '58 Johnson 18, and in the manual (Seloc) it says "As the float is lifted from the carburetor, observe the small spring attached to the needle." but there is no spring!
I didn't lose it, there just wasn't one, I thought maybe a previous owner had lost it and not bothered to replace it, I don't even know what it's meant to do.
Then I checked the exploded view of the carb and it doesn't show a spring, neither does the diagram that came with my carb service kit.
So should it have a spring or not? My other outboard (Seagull) doesn't have a spring on the inlet valve, I know because I just serviced that too. Although it's a simpler carb the float chamber works in exactly the same way of course. There have been a few discrepancies between what the manual says and what actually happens in my engine, is this just another one?
