missing start stop indicators

I have got my little 3 hp Johnson all ready to fire up. It starts like a champ but is revving too high. Not sure which way is up and down and stop. Indicators have worn off. Please tell me the do's and don't s.This is a 1993 3 hp. Would like to adjust settings but I want something a bit slower to get comfortable with. Please help.

POp the hood, watch the throttle linkage as you twist the grip, make sure it retards all the way back, then run it and see if helping it actually slows it down, might be stiff links, if you run it on a hose it will idle higher anyway, put it in the water and it will idle down by almost 400rpm.
You'll soon find out which way is up when you release the hounds.
