Mississippi River trip delayed

It seems as though I will not be able to make the cruise from Tulsa down to Jay Merrill's end of he country this year. The rising river right now, the increased barge traffic when the water first goes down, the closing of one of the locks in September, and available time off have conspired to delay this long awaited journey aboard the steam launch.

Bummer.:(

Has the recent flooding delayed any of the rest of you river rats?

I guess I will have to comfort myself with some cruising here in the state. Any cruising is better than no cruising!

Re: Mississippi River trip delayed

For whatever it is worth, I waited weeks to do some photography on the river due to the high waters we had a couple of months ago. At the time, the river was running at about 6 knots and more than 1.25 million cubic feet of water per second. Its almost hard to descibe how much debris, including many, many entire trees, could be seen running down the river.

The river demands a healthy amount of respect even during the lighter flows of late summer, but when there has been high water pushing it at peak flow, its just not a good place to be in a small boat.

I know you were feeling ready to go but the recent flooding upriver is going to push the flow rate and water levels back up, and it is going to load the river with junk again. Besides, now you have another year to stockoile wood for fuel!

Floods usually don't bother me as I grew up reading the water. This year is different though as the levels are close to record and I have not been in the lower river system in thirty yeasrs. Running cut off is one thing, but you have to know where they go and how long they will last. I am getting older and slower too.

Debris and sawyers is another common thing, but the carcasses and bacteria from dead animals and sewage from this years record flood is another. So is the increased tow traffic when the river conditions get right. All of those penned up barges will have just three months to do nine months of hauling. I don't want to be the d----d fool my friends like to cuss that pops out of a cutoff right in front of a quarter mile tow. I especially don't want you guys posting my trip in the Stupid Human Tricks catagory!

Ark City to Vicksburg main channel flow is supposed to hit 14 MPH. Out at the overflow it will be down to 4mph, but that is a lot of work reading the river that fine. This is supposed to be a pleasure trip, not adventures in moving!

I'm not surprised at the 14 mph waterflow that you mentioned. The common description here during the high flow period has been 6 kts, but it actually seemed faster to me. The river here is wide enough that we get a variable flow, depending on how close to the middle you are. The logs that I was seeing in the middle were zipping by at a very fast pace and seemed more like about 10 knots. The ships were fun to watch going down river too because they were really moving in comparison to what we normally see.

I can't imagine why you would cancel the trip. ;) This is what you guys down river have to look forward to. These are a few of the pictures that my son and I took while we were helping sandbag the Mississippi River in Hamburg, IL earlier this week.

Let's just say .... been there, done that, have the t-shirt, the bumper stickers, photo albums, 2-1/2 months of unemployment, 6 more months of commuting 700 miles a week just to get to/from another city to work, having to maintain two households, 30 hours at most at my real home each weekend before having to go back north for the week, putting up a friend in my home because hers had 14 feet of water in it & I needed a housekeeper while gone, army guys all over the place, helicopters all over the place, martial law, checkpoints, M16s seeming so out of place in a civilian environment, the only real violation of the 2nd amendment that I have ever seen - namely lawfully owned firearms being confiscated thus denying the owners personal protection during a time of anarchy, feeling like your home had become "Bagdad without the IEDs," spending $3,000 right off the bat just to come home with a generator, fuel & enough non-perishable food for two months because we were told that we would be forced to remain on our property for that long if we chose to come back, not getting a dime out of FEMA for anything other than the generator just because my home could be lived in after the storm, knowing that some people who never lost their jobs are still living rent free courtesy of FEMA, even though they were renters before, etc., etc., etc.

Do whatever you can for anybody that you know (or might not even know) along these towns on the Mississippi. What they are going through is very hard to describe but suffice it to say that it is heartbreaking and pretty much turns your world upside down. The good news is that it also demonstrates the incredible ability that most human beings have to persevere in the face of very daunting circumstances.

You just gave me another reason to delay this trip. In all reality I am socially inept. I don't mind being invited to peoples homes while we visit down river, but as I pull up to their living room door and tie off the launch, do I wear ordinary deck shoes, mud boots like we wear here on the farm on rainy days or hip waders? I don't want to offend our hosts.

Also, If I might inquire what is the appropriate house warming gift for such an occasion? White wine should be chilled, flowers will be hard to find and a sump pump would seem gauche.

Seriously though these poor people have many more weeks of suffering left. I agree with jay_merrils take. May we all find ways to help those who are really deserving. You won't hear them whine, so you will have to listen close.
