Hi, im new to this forum, and I just bought a used mitchell 14' fiberglass boat off of craigslist, I thought it was a pretty good, deal, it came with a very good condition trailer, an anchor, an 45lb thrust troll motor, all for $400. I thought it was a good deal. here's the boat specs:14ft fiberglass v-haul boat, 3 bench seats an 2 livewells, (I particularly thought the livewells were really cool)
it looks strikingly similar to this man's project boat I saw while browing:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=233331

only a little different. I just baught it today and wasnt able to take any pictures of it, only pictures I have of it are the ones off of craigslist so here they are.
I really dislike that speckled look on the interior, you can't see it in the pictures, but its the same as in the other person's post. I dont mind the exterior, just the
interior part of it looks ugly, and I want to paint it but have never done this sort of thing before. My dad has a paint sprayer and stuff I can use but I wouldnt know what would be the best paint for my particular boat. I also cant think of what color to make it what are you guys thoughts on it. I was thinking I could maybe paint the exterior too, and with like a gel paint thing that I heard of? but im not sure if that would work with this boat. also I need to fix the side rails, as you cant see in the pictures but it has side rail damage, but I can just patch that up its no problem, my cousine is good at that stuff, so any general oppinions on what I should do to it, I do have a bit of a budget, so before I go buying any gadgets or anything, I want to get the necessities taken care of. your oppinions..... p.s. I will take better pictures myself soon. thanks for your help !!

Re: mitchell 14' fiberglass, my first boat,

When picking a color scheme, take temperature into consideration. If you plan to use it in the summer, in a warm climate like I do, you will want to paint it a lighter color than if you're using it in the winter or in colder climates.

As far as paints go, I've heard that Interlux brightsides is good, and instead of spraying it, you use a method called roll and tip, which I am as of yet unfamiliar with, as I am nowhere near painting my restoration project boat yet. But the others around here discuss it frequently and I'm sure one of them can fill you in on the details.

PS - It sounds like you got yourself a great deal there, and congrats.

Re: mitchell 14' fiberglass, my first boat,

i have found over the years, that light gray, is the best interior color. not hot, and does not reflect the light.

That's also what I was going with... and mine is going to be a flat gray as opposed to a glossy gray.

Re: mitchell 14' fiberglass, my first boat,

Could I put the gelcoat stuff around the hull? would it work on the fiberglass?

Re: mitchell 14' fiberglass, my first boat,

HEY thanks for the advise, btw I was just thinking, because the rails just go over the side and are kind of flimsy, well at least look flimsy, the same type of rails on this boat http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=233331
could I do something like put pvc around it under the flaps to secure it a little bit more and generally make it look better? do you think that would generally work out, cause thats the only real thing that looks ugly on it, after im done painting.
what could I do with something like that, I wouldnt just cut them off, that could probably lead to a disaster, what could I do for that cosmeticaly. oh, and should
I paint the interior all the way up to the rails and on the rails to the outside,
or just to a line, and then leave the rest white? also whats your thought on the gelcoat for the hull?

TD, NICE! Great minds think alike, eh?

Now if only I could remember where I left my great mind... I know I put it down around here somewhere.

Re: mitchell 14' fiberglass, my first boat,

I'm the guy with the other Mitchell, I think that the rails are designed to keep spray on the outside of the boat where it belongs. But that being said. I may trim mine back just a bit to take out a few places where they are chipped or cracked. My boat has taken a few hard hits over the years and those gunnels show the effects. It will be interesting to keep track of each others progress!;)

Re: mitchell 14' fiberglass, my first boat,

also on mine there are some really bad chips, parts of em missing, so my cousin is coming over sometime today and we're going to work on fixing the fiberglass, he's really good with fiberglass patch. I wouldnt think to trim them, I dont think that would work out at all. what I was considering doing was underneath the rails filling with marine foam and then sealing it with some type of rubber to go halfway up the rails and covering the underside with some rubber from like homedepot or something, that the only way I would think about going about that; but now that I realize what there for I'll probably just repair them and leave them alone. after I have repaired the sides, im going to sand all the inside down and the rails and get all the crap out from under the rails, then I'm going to paint the inside a nice light blue, almost gray, but blue, using the polyurethane, really nice stuff cant wait to see what it makes the inside look like. then im going to sand the hull down and prime it and put possibly white gelcoat paint on . I already have the polyurethane so im going to do that first. but I might paint the hull a more off white blue color or something, im not sure yet. anyhow, thats my gameplan.

I recently got a 14ft mitchell but can't read capacity plate. Do you have any idea of weight limit or max horsepower? Right now I have a 2002 mercury 9.9 converted to a 15 and it runs 23mph. I'm ok.witj speed but I'm not a mercury fan so thinking of putting a new motor on it
