Mixing 2 Cycle Oils?

I have a 2008 Yamaha 70 2 stroke. My oil tank is 3/4 empty. I have been using non-synthetic oil. Would it cause a problem to switch to synthetic at this point? Or is that a bad idea. Is there a real advantage to using synthetic? I've put about 30 hrs this past year and not used 1 tank yet.

Thanks,
KWB

i switched my 40hp johnson over to synthetic when the VRO tank was about 1/4 full. it didn't seem to cause any problem. i ran about 3 gals of oil through before i sold it. i switched because synthetic polutes a little less.

Synthetic smokes less, is a better lubricant, less carbon build up and as was mentioned, is a little more eco-friendly. You can switch back and forth anytime.

Re: Mixing 2 Cycle Oils?

When I bought my flats boat 1 1/2 years ago it had Yamalube in it. I added - and am using - Pennzoil synthetic blend, no problem what so ever.

That being said, years ago we were involved in some testing and found that on recreational carb'd motors the blend (at 50:1) protected as well as full synthetic (100:1). If you can change the gas/oil ratio (premix or programmed) then the full synthetic may be superior.

I think I will switch to synthetic since it's time to fill up the tank. I buy my oil at West Marine.

Thanks for all your replies.

Keywest, Is that motor completly broken in? I had heard, but not confirmed that dino oil is preferred for breakin. Does you owners manual address this?

It's well past being broken in. The engine has 30 hrs on it.

Thanks,
