Mixing coil, CDI units?

I have read on several sites that you cannot mix coils or CDI units from older Force motors (1986-black, 1989-blue) but have seen some for sale on ebay both motors and parts that are mixed and they say either the motor ran fine or they are off of a running motor, anybody have info if you can mix and match?

Thanks

Don't, it will cause more ignition part failures.

Wait the motor on the boat I just bought has 1 black coil on the bottom cylinder the rest are blue? Does that mean I can expect problems down the line?

Re: Mixing coil, CDI units?

Thanks for the reply, the reason I asked is I picked up a complete parts motor ('89 vintage) to replace the lower unit on my '86 125 and if it would all inter change I will keep it, otherwise it parts out on ebay. Does anybody know if the whole system will fit from one to the other? By the way nice board, lots of good info here, have had my Bayliner almost 3 years now and any extra info on repairs and parts is greatly appreciated.

1990 and earlier: The trigger, carrier and flywheel are the same so if you replace the whole system it will fit. Main difference is that some Prestolite systems used made-up connections and others used a terminal board on the CD mounting plate.
