I want to winterize my 1989 Suzuki dt140 today. I don't know what brand or kind of gearlube is in the lower unit. Will it hurt anything if I drain the old stuff and put a different kind in?

Just thought of something else. Would it hurt to drain the gearlube now and wait til spring to fill back up? Maybe that promotes corrosion?

No problem either question Phil. If you leave the gearlube out busure to leave a note on the steering wheel so's in the spring it's not forgotten... :)

It's always a good idea to change lower unit oil in case water got it.
If it did, now it can't freeze & break anything or corrode over the winter.
I'd be real carefull leaving the lube out. Memories fade when the weather gets warm.
Some Suzuki guy should know proper lube.

Phil, Most, if not all, gearlubes of the same type are compatable. You should drain and refill the gearcase this fall, with the proper lube. I do not see the advantage in leaving the gearcase empty. And, if you do forget to fill it in the spring, it will cause major problems.
