Wife and I recently purchased an island with a 1/2 built cabin on it in Northern Minnesota. Naturally, we were advised to purchase a pontoon!

We paid $1800 for a 1985 16 foot pontoon with a 25 HP Johnson on it. Seemed a fair price, given the comparables on CL in Duluth and the Twin Cities. The pontoon is stripped bare but for a railing and a console. This suits our needs because (a) we will be hauling stuff back and forth to the island until the place is finished and furnished, and (b) we have only a couple of weeks vacation per year until I stop working (another 9 years or so). One nice thing is that the boat was purchased through the local marine mechanic, so I feel confident that the motor works and the hull is sound. The previous owner moved out of state and had to sell.

From what I gather here and elsewhere, the bigger the motor the better. That being said, it seems that everyone knows someone with a 9.9 pushing a pontoon along just fine.

Are there any short-term upgrades and long-term things to watch out for? As a new pontoon owner, I look forward to exploring the forums and taking advantage of the collective experiences of folks here.

Attached is a not-very-attractive picture of the boat, and a much more attractive picture of the island.

IMHO, I would just go with what you have until the cabin is finished or until retirement then look at upgrading both boat and motor.

If the deck is solid, the toons don't leak, and the motor's running satisfactorily I would leave it at that. A 25 on that little sixteen footer is plenty. Nice spread. I'm really jealous. Welcome to iboats.

You bought your own island w/ a cabin. You're kidding me right ??? Good for you. I agree with the others. Keep the boat as is until the Castle is finished and maybe upgrade the rig later for cruising around the moat encircling your little piece of heaven !!! Good luck.

Thanks for the responses! FWIW, the island is TINY: all of 130' by 225'. And the cabin is only half-complete: the shell is there and not much else. It was a heckuva deal: no one whose back isn't against the wall is selling right now. The worst part is trying to figure out how to spend more time up there.

I'd leave the pontoon just the way it is. I had a 6hp merc on a 20ft steel pontoon. went fast enought for fishing and would go a couple wekends on 6 gal gas. with an open deck you can just place deck boxes and move to accomadate your needs. Nice island, I'd like to have one but we have very few lakes out here so it's just not in the cards for me.
