Is it a Cobra or an 800? Cobras are shaft drive and have hydraulic rams like MerCruisers, 400s and 800s are ball gear drive and tilt with gears.

The Volve Penta drives that are basically Cobras advise using that very lubricant.

I'ts the Cobra SX series, and late model Volvos, that use the Mobil 1 gear oil. That is for '96 and later models I believe.

Most of the older OMC drives took the OMC hi vis, or the newer HPF gear oil. My mechanic uses the Merc bluish/green stuff in my Cobra and it seems to be doing well with it. He claims it's the best stuff around and sees less gear and shaft wear with it.

The Merc HP (blue/green) gear lube is as good a lube as you will find for the outdrives.

To answer your question on Mobil 1 Synthetic
gear lube in an OMC sterndrive. Yes, It offers
excellent protection for your lower unit.
I have been using it in my 1982 Sea Ray w/OMC
800 stringer for approx. 10 years and have never
had a failure and the gears and bearings look
like new. Also AMSOIL makes an excellent synthetic gear lube for Marine applications.
I also use have used MOBIL 1 15W50 in the engine
for approx. 10 years.
