I am mounting tabs on my ranger hull with built-in tank, does the gas tank share a common wall with the transom?

Even if the gas tank is just located adjacent to the transom, I'd still prefer to have a look inside! Is there no way you can get access to the inside of the transom?

On my boat, the screws for the tabs went about one third of an inch beyond the inside of the transom - enough to cause some real damage had there been a tank there. Other boats may have much thicker transoms, and I understand that, in many cases, the screws won't go all the way through.

The screws are 3/4" long, and I would recommend that you mark the drill so that you do not go deeper than necessary. This is not to say that you should not visualy check. If you do drill through the transom (depending on the thickness) then I suggest that after drilling the first hole, you use a coat hanger to see if there are other things behind the transom and how far they may be from the transom.

thanks John, I am the guy with the '91 Ranger 364V Had to use different screws because transom is concave and needed to fill space with washers. Not the nicest looking but hope it will work.

I wish I could be there to see your face the first time you check out the boat. That is if things are ok the first time.

I thought that I had drilled 14 holes in my boat just to make it handle worse than I could ever imagine. Nose down, rear end up, prop blowing out eveytime I took off. I had to lighten up on the preasure a bunch, even had to get lighter shocks. If this happens to be the case, after you get them adjusted, you will never remove them and it will be all you can tell your friends about. :D

LubeDude, I hope mine work ok the first time. I was kind of scared drilling as I am not handy at all. My Dad once said "Son get an education because if you have to use your hands to live you will starve!" Will Mobster exchange the shocks if to strong. I got the 80's as I have a 175 on 19 foot boat?

John will cetainly exchange the shocks. Set the system up as per the instructions for the first time, then if too much, (Yiu will know because your nose will be in the water too much. lighten the stiffness setting first, if too much, lighten the angle a bit at a time. One of the added pluses you will notice is that the backwash will be diminished greatly.
