I know many questions have been asked about this subject and I have viewed, I believe, every model to year chart I can find and am confused. I'm working on 85 HP Model 850 (6 cyl) with thunderbolt ignition Serial # 3949282. Everything I find shows it as 4 cyl. I've matched sn on transom to powerhead. Would like to find correct wiring diagram or schematic also. Anyone know what's up?

Put up some photo's of the motor. That might help.
But that serial number also falls in to the 115 hp for 1974 also. Somebody may have put 850 decals on it.

maxrules shows serial numbers for an 1150 as
115 1974 E 3761035 - 4115237

1974 Mercury brochure shows 850 as 4 cycl.
1974 Mercury brochure shows 1150 as 6 cycl.

Thanks tgp***, I concurr with your info & have had the same thought about the decals, but it all appears original. I guess I'll have to investigate a bit further. Do you know of any particular parts on it which would help I.D. it? It has power tilt & trim so designation should be ELPT I believe.

Found it has prop. p/n 48 72762A-4 19P; believe it to be 12 3/4 " x 19"... hmm, must be 115 HP.

Thanks

Post some photo's. A picture is worth a thousand words. Someone here, whom I'm sure knows more than than I do will help if they can. I have no other ideas on what to check. On the head of my 1967 650ss, there is a name stamped on the engine block is says "panther". Not sure but they may have names for the engine blocks. Maybe the 850's and 1150 have names also. It would be interesting to know. I wish mine had trim and tilt not even sure they made for my engine/year.
