Model code on block?

A friend bought a theft recovery from auction.<br />We think its a 20hp but no way to tell.<br />To obtain parts he'll need some info. Does anyone know if there is info on the block? The serial tag is chiselled off and the other side is grinded.<br />If anyone has any clues as to year please help.<br />It says 100:1 at the fuel input. Have they always used 100:1?

I forgot to add that it is a Yamaha. Some the motor parts start with 6L2.<br />From what I can find so far it seems that it may be a 96-97 or 88-04 by the 6L2 part numbers. any help would be appreciated

Well I can now tell that either no one knows or can't be bothered to answer the question. A simple there is no way to tell would have sufficed.

The forum was down so that might be why you've had no replies. There should be a plate on the engine with a code number, a description can be found here - http://www.yamaha-motor.co.uk/products/marine/outboards/model_codes.jsp

Thanks for the reply. I've looked for this plate and can't seem to find it. Any clue as to where it would be located? eg: Under the flywheel etc....<br />I don't want to pull the entire engine apart unless I have to..
