I'm in search of a factory service manual for my outboard and now that I have the model number it has me curious as to what everything stands for. The model number is j225tlerk. The 225 is obviously the hp rating, but what about the letters? Anyone know a good source for a factory service manual, they seem to be difficult to come by. I have a seloc manual but think the factory manual may be more beneficial if ever in need of major work. Thanks,

Re: Model number decoding and factory service manual

"J" stands for Johnson

"T" stands for trim and tilt

"L" stands for long shaft.

"ER" is the year.....see below

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

"E" = 9
"R" = 4 1994 YEAR

K is the model run which has some value to wrenchs but not much.....mainly for parts differences on some model runs.

You can search up Ken Cook Co. They sell reprints of the original OEM manuals.
