Model number question

I have a Johnson outboard, and the plate says its model number is FD-10 L. I know that it means that it is a 1956 15-horse, but what does the "L" designate?

It's not "Long" as, well, it isn't "long." Could it be "Left?" "Lucky?" "Lightning-fast?" "Long-lasting?"
