Model vs year?

I am looking at an evinrude motor to buy. The seller says it is a 1998 model.
Using the nada lookup for the model number E140TLERR seems to be a 1994. There may be only one R on the end of the model number.
Is there a better place to look up model and years than nada? If so where?
I want to know for sure before I spring.

Thanks ahead

Re: Model vs year?

dave, i would be more concerned as to the condition, and maintainance, than a 4 year difference is age. a 30 y/o can be better than an abused 3 y/o. don't go by nada values, usually extremely low. how's the pontoon project coming along?

For Evinrude and Johnsons with the funny code, take the two letters preceding the last one (ER) and use the code word INTRODUCES where I=1, N=2, T=3, well you get the idea. ER=94.

Re: Model vs year?

Good morning Tash,

I am still looking for just the right deal on a pontoon. This one with the 140 EV looks promising, but I am concerned about the motor being a 94 when it was listed as a 98. I am to go and look at the rig tomorrow and test ride etc. It is a 24 footer.
My computer has been sick for a week or so . Hopefully the medicine of a few bucks has the problem in a little better health. Buck pills aways seem to work.
By the way since 94 is the last year the 140 horsepower was made, is it known as a good engine or a "dog" ?

Thanks
Uncle Dave

if i'm not mistaken it's a big looper, and a reliable engine. take some pics of it and the boat, and post.
