Modern Day Pirates?/!

I recently viewed an article in a boating magazine stating an alert about Pirates. They come up on you on high speed boats and take over the boat. It takes place in the carribean and said it happens at night or marinas that are not looked after. Is this true?/!!!!!<br /><br />JAZZ

That is not unique to the Carribean. There are places in Central/South America and in Asia that you don't want to go to even if you are armed to the teeth.

yes that quite sad but true, there are modern day pirates. Sometimes when you leave you boat in the marina they comein and take you O/B and other stuff from your boat too.

Sad as it sounds, you better believe there are still pirates. Think about it. Why bother car-jacking someone for a lousey 20 -30 thousand dollar car and have to make a quick get away and worry about witnesses. Boats can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also, the chances of any witnesses seeing a crime like that is very slim. And, it could be days or even weeks before anyone even realizes that you and your boat are MIA. Especially if you are taking a long trip by sea. Think about it. If I'm a bad guy, a boat seems like a pretty easy target.

I am not talking about old pirates with cannons just kidding. <br /><br />It was an article in a magazine and I thought it was interesting. Therefore, this is why I posted it. To see what other people think.<br /><br />JAZZ

Hi, Jazz.<br /><br />I fished the Gulf Stream a lot back in the early 80s. Everyone carried heavy metal in those days because the drug runners were all over the place. They would shoot you, take your boat to run drugs, then abandon it.

Remember to not bring guns to countries that don't allow them. Even Mexico has some strict gun laws.<br /><br />Some ways to protect yourself in dangerous areas are:<br />1. Travel in groups of boats<br />2. Don't announce your position on the vhf radio etc..<br />3. Pack guns, flares, where possible. <br /><br />Anyone have any more?<br /><br />- bayman
