The motor doesn't really care what control cables are hooked up to it. The cables are set by the control box, not the motor. I am pretty sure you can put the throttle clip and the shift pin on a later style cable. You would need to make sure you have the larger style cable anchors (you may already have them depending on what cables you're currently using) on the motor to accommodate the plastic trunion nut on the cables.

So, the question is, what control box are you attempting to use?

If I remember correctly those motors had the brass cylinder-shaped clamp (with two screws) that allowed the removal of the cable ends and the cable anchors can then unscrew. If so, you should be able to transplant them to newer cables. You may need to make some mods however.

The end of the cable that goes in the control box is different on 1979-up, than pre-1979. So you cannot use the new cables in the old control. But why would you want to?? The pre-1979 cables are readily available. Teleflex type 400 here at iboats.

FWIW, the new cables can work on the motor end, with the right hardware.

Sorry, I mean the steering cable. I am ok with throttle cables, You know how the older steering wheel has cable that spools around the steering wheel cylinder under the console.. is it possible to change it?

What kind of steering system do you have in there now? A single cable one? or the older clothesline/pulley system?

The wheels are surprisingly fairly universal.

What kind of boat are we dealing with here, that would help and you have a rope and pully steering system on it now?

The more info you give us the better and more accurate the responses will be.

If you have a rope steering on it now and you have the money I would update to at least a rack and pinion but an NFB system is better and yes if you have a rope and pully you will need to update the helm and cable but you may be able to use your steering wheel still.
