I was thinking of putting in a Moeller Transom Drain that is plastic. iboats sells them. My question, is that a good ideal? I want to mount it from the inside so the screw holes would be on the transom it self. My next question is what would i seal the outside with? I know that not all marine caulks are compatable with plastic. Could i make up some peanut butter and seal the outside.

Thank you.

I would definately seal that inside and out with 3M 5200. I hear its worked well with the plastic splash well drains, hope so cuz I just installed a pair.

I have another question. Do it have to have a transum drain can i just put a bilge pump in there? I have seen post where some boats do not have a transom drain?

O by the way thank you for your answer. I was wondering if 5200 was compatable with plastic or what ever these are made from.

just keep a real close eye on them the sun likes to do nasty things to them, my wellcraft had to have a transom replacement because of them. The 5200 will work but is very stout stuff they will have to be broken out if you ever need to replace them. I would never use them but thats just my personal opinion..

No, but I'd strongly recommend it. When the boat is stored, unless it is Always inside, you should have the bow up enuf to allow any water that might get inside the boat to drain to the stern and out the un-plugged transom drain tube.

Good call did not think of that. Is there a good video of how to install a brass drain tube out there?

No problem with that boat, but putting the drain in the way you propose will have the tube approx. 1" above the bottom of the bilge and therefore the bilge will not be allowed to drain completely. I would advise you to install it the way it was intented to be installed. If you predrill your holes and coat them and the screws with the 5200 you will not have any water penetration issues on the transom.

Here's how you can make your own installation tool.

This is the drain I got when I went to the boat store. They said the new boats are using them so I went and took a look and there they where. My question is the tube does not go all the way throught the transom so what is the best way to seal the wood? could I just use 5200 and smear around on the wood? I was thinking of lining the hole with a brass tube and 5200 then installing the drain plug? What do you guys think?

Re: Moeller Transom Drain

Using that drain, I'd recommend drilling the drain hole about a 1/4" bigger than needed and then mixing up some PB and filling the entire hole with. When dry, Redrill the hole to the required size for the plug. This way if it ever leaks it can never get to the wood.

Re: Moeller Transom Drain

I would suggest you install the brass drain plug.

Those plastic goodies I have seen mainly on PWC and little Yammy type jet boats.

For your application I would stick with the Brass one. What you want to do is Dry Fit the whole installation ..then 5200 the crap out everything so it spooges out everywhere In your final install ( no need to finger the hole with it ). Clean up what comes out.

Oh yea..sand the hull where the "flange" of the fitting seats ( does not matter if its plastic or brass .. sand/scuff/wipe clean then install ).

Good luck m8.
