I have a 1990 OR 1991 Evinrude 175 XP w/VRO and have recently experienced a power problem. While running down the lake at about 4000rpm I experienced a momentary power loss. It only lasted a second (or less) and came right back. This has happened three times so far, generally at similar power settings. This was not a "miss" like one or more cyl were having a problem, It was a brief, total loss of power. I am wondering about the power pack or possibly a loose wire, any suggestions on where to start? Aside from replacing a starter I have had no trouble with this motor.

Re: Momentary Power Loss

JD..... There have been times when the ignition switch kill circuit would develop an intermitent resistance. This would be the same as turning your ignition switch off and on very quickly. To check this possible problem, remove the black/yellow wire from the back of the ignition switch. If that location is too difficult to get at (inside the c/box), trace the black/yellow wire from the engine harness to the powerpack connector and disconnect it there.

If this cures your problem, replace the ignition switch. Also, check all of the engine grounds which lead from the pack.

Note..... with the black/yellow wire disconnected, it will be impossible to shut the engine down by turning the key off.
