monitor - Microsoft Internet Explorer

That's what it is in the Task Manager. A little box keeps popping up and hiding. I also have a new green square icon down by my clock that says CPU Usage x%. I haven't downloaded any software lately, but this started popping up yesterday. I also have a cookie from internetaccessmonitor.com (dad@www.internetaccessmonitor(1).txt)

I'm also getting a popup You're Invited! - Microsoft Internet Explorer from Opinion Central. These both started yesterday.

Innocent Microsoft update, adware, or am I being watched? AVG-Free and Spybot Search and Destroy aren't finding anything.

Interesting! As I was typing this it all went away. I didn't close anything, though I was about to. The item disappeared from Task Manager and the little green box icon is gone.

The little green box is part of the task mananger.... it is the cpu useage and appears on the task bar when the task manager is opened.

Do a single "cntrl/alt/delete" and you will open the task manager and see what I was saying.

As far as the pop-up..... it's tied to something you did recently.

Dead-on regarding the green box. The rest looks innocent enough after some searches, just adware that I have been "blessed" with. Lucky me!

For what it is worth - I finally downloaded Firefox and what a refreshing difference. And - - - It is a LOT faster than the "other" brand.

Using Alt+Ctrl+Del will show very little of what is going on in the background. If you really want to see what is loaded at boot-up, go to Start, then click Run. In the command box type msconfig and hit enter.

When the System Configuration Utility comes up, click the Startup tab. Here you will see all the programs/processes loaded every time you boot up the computer. You can un-check anything you don't want loading.

If your PC takes an eternity to boot up, you probably need to cut down the clutter that accumulates in Windoze. Some things like MicroFRICKENsoft Messenger Service just won't die. I have it unchecked so it won't load upon startup, but it pop's up shortly after anyway.

Oh, by the way, I HATE IE.....FireFox is the only way I browse.

Thanks for the link but unfortunately I can't remove it. My wife uses it, so it has to stay. I just don't want it loaded into RAM, taking up resources, unless I actually want to use it.

I don't remember how, but I did do away with it on my laptop. The laptop is all mine, the wife has no say-so over what's on it, and I keep it trimmed down and running fast. The only time she uses it is to bluetooth ringtones into her phone.

If you want to see everything that's running, download tlist.exe from the resource kit and run it from a command prompt. You can even see which dll's are loaded for each process.

Two different tools with two totally different purposes. MSconfig will tell you what is configured to startup. It doesn't tell you what is running currently or give you the ability to kill it. Also... "program a" can be started automatically then load "programs b,c,d,etc..." MSconfig alone can't help you much with that. It's good to use them both.
