monitoring electrical system

1985 suzuki DT30 , Ya'all i need some advice here....my little Whaler has the DT30 to push it....all runs great, but i do want to monitor the charging system, whats better...volt gauge or amp gauge and to what do i hook it up to.....Thanks.

All you need is a volt gauge hooked up to your ignition switch.
