Hi there
I?m not sure i am in the right category, but i?ll try anyway.

I am (still) the happy owner of a Monterey 262 cruiser from 2001.
My top speed is only a dissapointing 22 knots!? at 4000 rpm on the engine (won?t go higher in current setup).
Prop is a 14?x16 four blade Wortex (original was 15X17 three blade). Engine is a 5.7 EFI with 260 hp and an Alpha drive with gear ratio 1:1.47 (I think).
Trimming the boat with all the skills i have has not helped.
Something must be terrible wrong here or???

You are correct. Something is wrong. You should be able to get way more than 4000 max RPM with your current prop. My first step would be to get a complete tune-up. You may want to contact Monterey for a prop recommendation.

Re: Monterey 262 issue

Motor is rated for 4,800. boat dry is 5,500 imo it should run 35 or so at 4,800
You have issues other than prop.Is the bottom clean and smooth? Does the throttle open all the way?Has it had a recent tune up? Maybe its just a plug wire off
or shorted? Timing set and advancing as it should.
A compression check would tell you about motor condition and give you the oportunity to note the location of the plugs and their condition.

Re: Monterey 262 issue

I replaced the head gaskets one month ago due to the fact, that the engine drank cooling fluid, no leakage since. I feel there is good compression.
Engine starts fine and runs smoothly in idle, timing was set according to the manual. The fuel pump sound a little bit odd though (fuel pressure??). Engine runs 3500 rpm at 20 knots.
Hole shot is not impressive, and the engine has to work a lot when accelerating in to plane.
Bottom is clean as far as i can see, it had a new coat of antifouling before it went into the water.

Re: Monterey 262 issue

So I hate to say this, but I think you need to go back and recheck valve lash, idle timing, timing total advance, plug wiring, fuel pump pressure, etc. You said you had good compression, what are your numbers? Have you double checked your plug wires? Pull them off one at a time, you should see about the same change in idle RPM. If there is no change on one of them then that one has a problem.

Re: Monterey 262 issue

Valve lash was adjusted by a mechanic "by the book" also the ignition timing using a strobe. How do i check fuel pressure?? Havent measured the compression, but by turning the engine by hand, it seems OK. Will try to get some figures.
Will check the wiring this weekend, also do a more thorough inspection of the hull.
More info when this is done.

You really need to get a Service Manual. Dealing with an ECM controlled modern engine is difficult even with a manual and the proper scan tool.
