That's a 1975 model. If it's overheating, even after you changed the impeller, I'd have a look at the thermostat. I assume it has one. If the impeller just "looks good" but you haven't changed it, change it.

Plugs won't make it overheat, but I don't know the right plugs for that outboard. Let me check...

Champion's web site shows the L82C as the proper plug for that outboard.

Fuel to oil ratio for all the Chrysler-built Montgomery Wards outboards is 50:1.

Re: Montgomery Ward 6hp?

I had a 9.6 sea king and one day it pumped water fine and the next day nothing. I pulled the lower unit and the impeller looked fine. I put it back together and ran it and still nothing. I messed with it a couple more times without any success and decided to buy a new impeller. Installed the new impeller and it fixed the problem.

Before all of this happened the motor was overheating. Compared to my other sea king only about half the water was shooting out the back holes. I removed the lower unit and stuck a garden hose with a jet nozzle on the end up the water tube and blew it out. Pumped water fine after that. No more overheating.

You can probably find an impeller off ebay. That's where I got mine. Search for Chrysler impeller and then find the Seller that goes by the name of Sanfords Goodies (he will be in the ebay store section). Measure your impeller and see if the one he sells matches it. I think his impellers are for 9.9's but that doesn't mean it won't work for your motor.

I buy my impellers from NAPA for my 56 5hp Sea King. I would think they would possibly have yours also...Good luck....
