You need to get yourself a service manual. You may find one at the library.Your motor is a 77 built by Chrysler.I believe there are three possible ignition systems for your motor.
This isn't going to be good news.Indiscrimnate trouble shooting of the ignition on your motor can cause damage to the components.I believe some components are no longer available.Plug wires must always be able to discharge to ground. The Chrysler pros should be along with more info.

As for compression question, that is easy to determine with a comp gage.

Fortunatly, yours does not have CD ignition so it is pretty simple.

So, do you have spark at the plugs/wires? It should jump at least a 1/4" gap.

If you do have a 1/4" spark, backfiring could indicate the spark is at the wrong time. Thsi can be caused by the spark plug wires swapped to the wrong plugs. OR by the primary leads to the coils swapped to the wrong coil. OR by improper tightening of the flywheel nut, causing the key to shear putting the flywheel in the wrong relation to the shaft.

These ideas should keep you busy for awhile...
