I have a Montgomery Wards Outboard Motor. The Model # is 54GG-9011. The Serial # is 37379. I would like to know the year and size of this motor. I would also like to know where I can get a repair/owner's manual and parts for this outboard motor.

54GG9011 is a 1945 5 hp. (reverse first 2 numbers) Built by the Gale devision of OMC.This is a pretty early motor. You might try at the Antique Out Board Motor Club www.aomci.org for parts and service help.Don't ask them what its worth. We'll be glad to try to help with any questions.

Thanks, Steelspike, for your help. We need one piston and rings set and an intake manifold. We wrote to aomci.com, but haven't heard anything yet. Do you know how much this out board is worth once it's restored?

I really am on the outside on Collectable prices.Keep in mind condition is everything especially completeness.I think your best bet is to watch ebay for a similar motor. keep in mind condition and the buyer has to pay shipping.
It appears that model first appeared in 41/42 based on the Gale 253/254
last year for 253/254 based Sea King was 46.Can't tell you if there was much change with the 2W2 Gale 5.

The 5hp Gale was made for several years in a form such as yours. In 1951 it got a neutral clutch, and in 1955 it got a full gearshift. However, it continued to be produced without the clutch/shift and sold a "Standard" model

There are a lot of them around, so they are not super valuable. I jsut bought one with the neutral clutch for $45 and it has $40 worth of new coils in it.

Need help with specs of old montgomery ward motor

Hi i am relatively new to motors and I recently got a free montgomery ward motor made by Gale Products. Its model number is gg18734b. I was hoping someone would have some info on what year it is, what hp, if it needs to be in water to start (was told it was air cooled and didnt need to be in water), and where oil and etc is. Thanks a bunch.

Welcome,I only find a GG 18734C A 63,15 hp., double check your number. For reference that is a twin cylinder 75lb motor.63 was the last year for Gale production.
All Gale motors are water cooled (with the possible exception of the early 1.5)and have a pump that will be damaged if run without water.Oil is mixed with the fuel, 24:1 ratio using TCW3 rated oil.
5.3 ozs per gallon. 1qt to 6 gallons.

Check the serial number. It should have a couple of numbers followed by a X. Reverse those numbers to find the year. In other words, a 1963 would be 36X-----.

1963 had some confusing numbers. It was the last year for Gale production and they ran out of motors, so they brought some in from Canada to fulfill their orders from Wards. There are some models out there that "don't exist"---but they do. Canada continued to build their version of the Gale motors under the Elto brand name fo a couple of years after Gale USA stopped.

Whoever told you that it was air cooled is just plain coo-coo. Gale never made any air cooled motors. But Wards did sell some air cooled Clintons, but they were not "GG" models.
