Have a 1970 Montgomery Wards 9.6 hp and the power head is very loose from the base. There's a rubber gasket between the two and would like to replace it. What all in involved with the job and are they still available? I tightened all the bolts but didn't help any.

Re: Montgomery Wards power head gasket replacement.

Hi Bearcamp<br />Your 9.6hp SeaKing mod#VWB27009A is a Chrysler built motor. The parts you need to make this repair should still be around. You will have to seek them out from a place that deals obselete Chrysler parts or find a donor motor. You are having a problem in the isolation system here (shock mounts). I don,t know which mount, or mounts need attention, you will have to figure that out. You will have to remove the power head in order to see exactly what is going on. The bolts (screws) you tightend just fasten the power head to the exhaust housing. The power head and exhaust housing as a unit are then isolated or suspended from the swivel bracket and transom mount. My guess is the lions share of this problem is in either the upper or lower shock mounts, possibly causing wear of the squareish rubber gasket at the base of the shroud. Go ahead and disassemble this thing. You may find a missing or loose bolt or a broken cast part. Let us know what you find.

Re: Montgomery Wards power head gasket replacement.

Here's what I found. removed the power head and the exhaust gasket is shot, came off in about 3 pieces. The rubber shock mount seems to look okay, and sets about 1/2 inch above the housing, but mount is cracked. Didn't see a lower one. The rubber seal looks good but is a little oily and slides around easy. I believe (if I can find parts) I'll replace the exhaust gasket, top shock mount (unless I can find the lower one in there) and the rubber base gasket. Does anyone know where the lower shock mount is.? Didn't see it in a manual. Also....where can I get parts????
