Background

So I picked up pontoon boat about 2 weeks ago its a 24ft landau. Its strictly a party boat and I installed probably an excessive amount of stereo equipment. With the batteries and stereo stuff loaded with people the boat seems like it does okay. The problem is that our first trip was to Havasu we went to Copper Canyon. We had the loudest music a kegerator and I was grilling (it's actually a lot of fun and gives me something to do as I don't drink while driving). I turned around theres probably 25 people on the boat and the front was dipping under a bit.

The Solution?

So I've been researching adding a 3rd toon but that seems like a pain. Or I was maybe thinking about fabricating an aluminum box on the bottom that would float but ride above the water while planed out. I even contemplated throwing an air mattress under there but there are too many screws and what not that I know will just pop it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

25 people is about DOUBLE your capacity. It is an accident AND lawsuit waiting to happen. As a boat owner, the responsibility is on you to know the LEGAL capacity of your vessel. Modifications to enhance the max. capacity will require re-certification to avoid problems in the future.

Ya , you have legal nightmare on your hands, your boat is rated for x number of people and that is all it can hold, it is sinking for a reason, you don't need more bouyancy you need less people, I suggest a door man and only let the hottest women on the boat.

All those poeple are your friends , until something happens then the lawyers come out

Alot people lash boats together which is a good way around this, and they were joking baout the helium, it has no affect on bouyance.

I believe he said it was dipping under while stoped. Boat rating for amount of people is a sugested total. You can put as miny people on a boat that you have life jackets for.. I Didn't say it was safe. We have a number of boats on our lake that raft up and party with a boat load of people well over the sugested capacity Local rangers only check for safety equipment....

I have a 24' Landau and can't even imagine 25 people on it. It must have been " standing room only"!!! That's crazy!!

Sounds like a formula for a real disaster! Better buy a larger boat, or lose a few "friends"...Good Luck!

I think the lawyers call it a wrongful death suit.

Engreps, The insurance company will DENY any claims if you have more than the rated number of people on board. So while the local officers may overlook it as long as you have safety equipment, if something goes wrong you are TOTALLY screwed.

Re: More Buoyancy While Stopped

I grew up in a college town with lots of international students, most of them from the middle east but some from Africa, so the church I attended had a very large and dynamic international student ministry. One fine weekend some of the church members took a crowd of them to a nearby lake for a lake weekend. On Saturday afternoon there was a large group on a double deck party barge enjoying the beautiful day when a wasp made an appearance on one side of the barge. Guess where the entire crowd went en masse? The wasp followed them, so they all ran to the other side of the barge.:eek: The show continued for several minutes while the mortified boat owner did his best to calm them down and help them to understand what would happen if they didn't stop overloading the barge on one side then the other. Fortunately the wasp relented before the boat flipped. The irony was they were the most intelligent students at the university, particularly in subjects such as physics. Didn't matter that day though.:eek::eek:

I think you need a bigger boat or fewer friends.

I'm thinkin' the air mattress might work. Get like...a dozen or so of 'em, and bungee cord 'em to the sides...all around. Then fill THOSE with helium...

OH...OH...wait! I got it! Anyone see the movie "UP!"? Get the picture?
