Hello. I read for three days and found info. Now joined to ask questions.
I'm not a boat tech, just a country boy.

'58, 7.5hp, green, old. Parts motor too.
#s taken from tiller handle tag
Model # of top end, 571 58781
Model # of lower unit 571 58751

I swapped out lower unit, impellor looked good to me, serviced lightly to see if it would fire. It started right up.

Number one concern is if the cooling flow is right. How do I check for this?
There's a sticker says coolant flow indicator, but baffles me as to where to check. I removed pipe plug from bottom of head and water squirts intermitantly but not steady stream.

My concern is if I seated the copper tube into lower area properly. How hot should this engine run?

I have other concerns but that is the major one on my mind. Thanks.

should not run hot at all. you should have a good stream out of the pipe off the head.

Don't take this to the bank because my memory isn't what it used to be. I believe on the 7.5 you will find that there will be a slow drip from a small gap in the exhaust cover gasket. The drip should be about 1/2' forward of a little arrow on the aforementioned sticker. If you can't find it I have one in the shed that I can check for certain.

Exactly what I was looking for. I fear I may have to redo the tail. I'll try running it again first though. Hind sight being 20/20, if I try again I will run a stiff wire to help align the copper tube next time. I'm practiced up now.

Other things I did, tell me if wrong.

Points cleaned and set to .020.
Plugs .035
Fuel lines? Looks like needs 3/16". Couldn't find so used 4.5mm but it's thin wall and I don't like it. Please advise.
Fuel mix calls for 16 to 1. But that was old school 30wt. With modern oil, Ratio?
Lower unit 90wt gear lube. I don't like that it leaks, will try heavier grease.
"Most" carb and pump issues cured without tearing down. I will if I have to but wont if not.
This fuel system is the one with diaphram looking pump, FOR NOW.
The parts motor is getting smaller.

Thanks a lot.

Use 16/1, period. The oil may be modern but the motor is still "old school."

I was able to find 3/16" fuel line at my local Advanced Auto Parts store.

Re: more elgin 7.5

I now see the gasket gap for water wheep hole on the parts motor. The main motor seems to have no gasket, I cleaned the hole best I could, it's small and could have been plugged.

Rodger on the thick oil mix, will do.

Found the fuel line at Advance, thanks I usaully avoid those stores and never thought to try there.

Next question. Is there a link anywhere to the exploded view of the prop case? Or is that pay per view only?

Edit, see next reply below.

I looked and looked. All I found was, "It's simple" to change the impellor.

Where it is fighting me is installing the prop case to the tail case. I might have the parts in the wrong order. I glued the fin plate on with silicone to hold it. I'll let it dry and try again, I'll get it.

but that parts order kind of bugs me. The first time I disassembled it, it kind of exploded, and, it could have been wrong before.

Hey thanks a lot folks. Site has been big help. I will win.
Been looking around to try and contribute somewhere, just seems guys here have been there done that on the topics I could reply. Some mechanical geniuses here for sure.

I'll be watching, thanks again.

Re: more elgin 7.5

EDIT, I got the lower back together. After tearing it the rest of the way apart I think it was assembled wrong to begin with (the nuetral mechanism).

Now to find new shear pin and cooling system test again. I may sell this antique then buy a small newer motor that is light weight,

Exploded picture would be nice.

I WIN.

Next is a fuel primer bulb and new plugs. If that does not smooth it out to my liking, into the carb and or fuel pump.

Glad I found this site, was a great help.

Thanks to the three folks that replied. WB

I believe the fuel pump diaphragm is available here at iboats. Think Chrysler.

The water should squirt out in a pretty good tell tale stream. Trouble is, that hole gets plugged up real easy. It is just a section missing out of the gasket--a deliberate leak. It really doesn't matter if it is plugged up because that is just an indicator.
