more elgin ?

i know that its an elgin and its a 45 and thats its white fiberglass top and its on a 14 foot 1968 larson. dont know the year. it starts and runs but it back fires out the exhast and i dont think the water pump is working. and is the mixture 16.1? here are the # i got off the engine 63604530 1314 and on the plate is 0 1314 and that is the only # i can find. i know this thing needs to be put on the wall in my garage and that is where it is heading after i take my son out for his first fishing trip. my gramps took me on my fist trip in this boat so it a cintamental thing right now.<br />so what year is it?<br />what could be the back fire problem?<br />how to tell if the water pump is working? <br />16.1 ?<br />how do i cink the carb on it? <br />any help is good help thanks for any

We need the model number off the mounting bracket.<br /> Should be something like 574 ***x<br /> Motor most likely is built by McCulloch.<br /> Sneezing usually is from a poor fuel supply<br /> problem.Probably a dirty or gummed up carb.<br /> Sometimes a weak ignition. point gap is .020<br />electric start plug was UJ17V surface gap.May be a different number now manual start is J4C .035<br />gap<br /> use 50:1 fuel mix.<br /> Should be some water discharge on the lowerunit<br /> If nothing is visable run the motor and carefully<br />feel the head should be to hot to hold your<br />hand on but not so hot it burns it.<br /> If no one has been messing with the sync you shouldnt have to adj it.

thanks for the info the plate on the mount that is all the # on it, its to faded to read there is a hole the size of a quater under the powerhead is that the exhast or the water outlet if i get pic of the engine will some one be able to id the make and around about year.

Actually most Elgins were built by West Bend,followed by McCulloch I believe the Elgin name was dropped about that time59-60.
West Bend was purchased by Chrysler circa 1965 Chrysler bought by US Marine circa 1984 became Force.Absorbedv by Mercurys parent company
and dropped about 1999.
