More engine trouble

I, like many, took my boat out of hibernation today. I have a 1996 Johnson V6 Carb. 150hp motor. I throw on the muffs and she starts right up for me. Lots of smoke coming out. I assume this is normal? Just burning of all of the fogging oil, etc. that I used to winterize it. After 20-30 sec. of running, the engine shuts off. I try to start her up again and all I hear is the spinning of the starter, nothing happening with the engine. Same results time after time. I clean all of the spark plugs, check all of the connections and everything looks good. Does any one have any idea as to what could be wrong? Thanks for the help!

P.S. When I shut everything down and tilted the motor, some kind of black oil started draining from the lower unit through the propeller where the exhaust leaves the motor.

Re: More engine trouble

does the starter engage the engine and turn the motor? or you mean it doesn't spark and turn over?

The engine does not turn over, all I hear is the starter spinning when I turn the key. Thanks!

dirty bendix. Usually a good spraying of wd 40 will loosen it up

possibly also a low battery that is a centrifigal bendix and the starter needs to spin at a certain rpm to get it to rise. I would first clean the bendix and then try a hot battery.

Re: More engine trouble

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

oil is unburnt oil and fuel from the exhaust housing, motor is suppose to be stored in the down position.
