More fun.... Drive Shaft Spline Seal. How's this look?

The drive shaft spline seal is ripped up on my 1985 85hp. Did some searching of this forum, and turns out some folks just run without it. I would like to have the seal, especially as I boat in salt water, but can't find the part at any online retailer.

Wondering if its better to keep the torn seal in place (thinking it is offering some protection) or toss it and run without?

It appears that it does not slide over the crank, but instead compresses or accordions down as the shaft is inserted into the crank.

Any suggestions for substituting some rubber or vinyl tubing that would perform the same?

Hmm thinking how that looks. I've seen some grease boots on farm equipment that may do the job. Like on the tie rods ends on a 1952 8-N Ford tractor .
