1961 25 H.P. Gale Buccaneer is running pretty good now! Going to get new plug wires this week but a few more questions.
The outboard I have is control driven, what all would I need to change it over to a tiller drive? If I that can't be done, what all would I need to convert it to electric start? I know that I would need the flywheel and the starter, but not sure on what other parts may be needed. Also is it normal for the outboard to "cough" now and again when going into higher speed?
Thanks in advance, this message board has been most helpful!

Re: More Gale Questions

About a year ago I traded off the same (Wards Sea King version) motor for a 3.6 Scotty. The motor was just too big and heavy for my needs but anyway it was an electric start. Mine was also minus the tiller arm. I don't see why you can't hook up a tiller arm. I think it takes the older evinrude/johnson tiller arm. That arm is different from the newer ones. It has a one sided connection instead two on the later ones. You'll have to look at one to see what I mean. I was also looking for one and they're hard to find and usually upwards of $50 on ebay (Another reason I swapped it out). The starter system is fairly simple and without looking at it I'm not sure if you have the bracket to attach the starter (another expensive item - I dropped mine into the test tank). There's probably some electrical items but I can't remember. The flywheel you have may be good to go if it has teeth around it for the starter gear to engage. I do know that mine had an electric (selenoid) choke. Good luck!

Try the salvage yards listed in the Engine FAQs.

Re: More Gale Questions

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to do a little more homework! That List of salvage yards will come in handy!
