I have a 4cyl 50 horse and would like to get a few more ponies out of it. Boat is rated for a 60 horse. Will boysen reeds help? Serial number is 5797448. <br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Rick

Another question is was this motor actually one of the 40 hp at prop or was it made after they started measuring hp at the prop? What year did they start doi.ng that. The motor year is an 83 I think

Once the horsepower ratings changed, it dropped to 45. They called it Classic Fifty. It never put out more than that and you'll never get more than a few more Hp out of it unless you wind more RPMs out of it. You'd have the best luck playing with props. If you don't have power trim, that would be a biggie if added.

From what I read here so far, boysen reeds don'<br />t work well at all in Mercs.

it's a lot of trouble to put new reeds in anyway.<br /><br />Usually the best option if you want more power is sell yours and buy a bigger engine.

Re: More horsepower fom a 50 horse

The 50s require tearing down to the crankshaft to access the reeds. Lot of work for minimal gain. Running 93 octane won't do anything other than empty your wallet quicker. Best bets are to either:<br />A) Make sure you're getting all 50 ponies as it is. What's the compression in all four holes? Is throttle linkage moving timing to full advance? Are carbs opening up all the way at WOT? Is motor peaking at max RPM with current prop? Lots of stuff you can check, most of which is easy and cheap to do.<br />B) Trade up to a larger motor.<br />- Scott

Set it for a 12 pole stator. And 50hp was the most you could crank out of those 44ci fours.<br /><br />-W
